Our Mission
Bringing higher education to those who struggle to access it is an indispensable task for a developing nation.
AKAM was established in 2013 to mark the centenary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's doctoral degree at Columbia University — a testament that higher education is the path to social reform.
Our work: identify SC/ST students completing higher secondary, guide them into college, monitor their scholarship disbursement, and support them until graduation.

Dr. R. Christodas Gandhi, IAS (Retd.) is the Founder of AKAM Foundation and one of Tamil Nadu's most distinguished civil servants. A former Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Tamil Nadu, he dedicated his illustrious administrative career to education, social justice, and the empowerment of marginalized communities. During his service, Dr. Gandhi was appointed as Tamil Nadu's representative to the Central Planning Commission for monitoring SC/ST education programmes — a recognition of both his expertise and his commitment to inclusive development. His lifetime of service has been recognized with several prestigious honors, including the "Nadamadum Ambedkar" Award (2011) and the Mahatma Gandhi Sahayogi Award (2007), among others. After retirement, rather than stepping away, Dr. Gandhi founded AKAM Foundation in 2012–13 — channeling his administrative experience and policy knowledge directly into helping SC/ST/SCA/SCC students claim their rightful scholarship entitlements and access higher education. Under his leadership, the Foundation has become a trusted bridge between students, institutions, and government.
